Chapter Eight

The chamber was eerily quiet. The mud made a sloshing sound as Sarah, Addie, and Eli crept across it, toward the lightest of the tunnels. Sarah felt watched and hoped that it was only Harriet being nosy.

“Are you getting the heebie-jeebies right now, or is it just me?” Eli finally asked.

“I’m glad you mentioned it. I really feel weird right now,” Sarah agreed. She rubbed her arm, where goosebumps had risen.

“Me, three,” Addie yelped.

Suddenly, Sarah thought she detected movement out of the corner of her eye. When she rapidly turned, however, nothing was there. Now feeling especially on edge, Sarah tread forward, more eager than ever to reach the exit.

Another shadowy movement caught her attention on her other side. Addie growled and raised her hackles. “Something is in here with us, and it’s not just a bat or a newt,” she told Sarah.

“It’s not Harriet, either,” Sarah whispered. She clutched Eli’s hand more tightly and grabbed Addie’s collar. “Could it be Madras?”

“We’re under Mount Katribus. The Leekins banned her from here,” Eli reminded her.

They exchanged glances, and then broke into a run. Though the mud was slippery, they managed to reach the mouth of the tunnel without any serious falls. Just as they attempted to enter the tunnel, the air in front of them turned green and shimmery. They hit the green curtain with a force strong enough to bounce them back. Sarah’s hair stood on end. She reached out to touch the curtain and all of the hairs on her arm bent toward it.

“It’s like a force field of energy or something,” Eli muttered.

Just as he said that, something pitch dark and vaguely humanoid in shape flew down from the cave ceiling. It landed on the muddy floor behind them in a squat and rose, raising its bowed head slowly to reveal its eyes like glowing red embers. The three wheeled around to see what had landed behind them and stared in horror.

“Sarah Spellwood, you think we’ll just let you leave so easily?” it said, its voice like many voices hissing at once.

Sarah soon realized why its voice sounded like that as many more such beings began to sprint toward them from the shadows and drop down from the ceiling. She screamed out the shield spell and enveloped Eli, Addie, and herself in a massive white shield just as the demons began to chant a spell together. Their language sounded archaic and demented, and she couldn’t understand it, but she knew it was evil. The sense of evil choked her.

The shield deflected the spell, but the demons kept chanting as they circled in closer. Sarah realized that each demon was using its own spell, overwhelming her shield with dark magic, and she worried the shield might weaken. There were at least a dozen of them. Desperate not to turn to wood, she turned into a wolf instead, and Addie followed suit. As she became closer to the ground on her paws, and her eyes adapted better to the light, Krell’s feather floated down beside her.
